Is a Cash Balance Plan Worth It?
If you own a medical practice in Montgomery County, MD or surrounding areas and already maximize your 401(k), a cash balance plan may help you save more for retirement while reducing current taxable income. The key is whether the tax benefits justify the funding commitment, employee costs, and administration.

How It Works
A cash balance plan is an employer-funded defined benefit plan. Participants receive a hypothetical account balance that grows through pay credits and interest credits specified in the plan. Unlike a 401(k), the employer generally bears the investment risk and must meet funding requirements.
The plan can complement a 401(k) or profit-sharing plan and potentially allow larger deductible contributions. Your contribution opportunity depends on actuarial calculations and plan design.
When It Might Make Sense
Consider a cash balance plan if:
Your practice has strong, predictable profits to support ongoing funding.
You want to accelerate retirement savings beyond your existing plan.
You can cover employee benefits, actuarial fees, and administration.
You are prepared for a long-term commitment rather than a one-year tax deduction.
Employer contributions are generally deductible, subject to applicable limits. However, a deduction does not eliminate the cash cost. This is why it is important to understand your practice's financial health and long-term financial objectives. Note, that there are also employee and administrative costs.
Deadlines and Planning
Plan adoption, tax deduction, and minimum-funding deadlines are different. Eligible employers can generally adopt a plan by their tax return deadline, including extensions, but be mindful of specifics around funding deadlines.
Planning before year-end gives your tax advisor and plan specialists time to review compensation, employee costs, contribution ranges, and cash flow. An extended tax return deadline does not automatically extend the minimum-funding deadline.
